What do two kid-less people do for fun on a Monday night?
Why - they watch the 131st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show! (Or some American Kennel Club Event!)
What else?
I never thought I would sit and watch "doggie tv" with Nathaniel, but here I am. I think that's how life is in general, though: one unexpected event leads to another... one opportunity forsaken in lieu of a completely different path. And voila - you find yourself exhausted, sitting on the futon, your husband asleep in the bed, your cat curled up by your side.
Watching The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
The show itself is pretty interesting. I am always amazed at how much dogs resemble their owner/handlers. Is the same true with cats? Or hamsters? Birds? (Oh God, I hope not, lest I should resemble my 18.2 pound House Monster. How would YOU like to resemble the House Monster?!? Didn't think so!)
"There goes the Corgie - short, stout, big dog in a small packages. The same could be said for the handler, a lively gentlemen, short on the stature but muscular and fierce..."
And...
"Behold the Smooth Collie - short haired, nice expression, bright eyes, smooth coat. Ditto for the owner...."
You get the drift.
Another thing about these doggie shows, is the manner in which the dogs AND the people walk. Or trot... Or canter? What's the word - glide? Who knows. Whatever they're doing, they look as though they're making their way in one continuous fluid motion across the floor. (Just like what I'm not doing in the pool. I've got some work to do in that department).
And for a good reason too: the last thing you need is a weeny dog getting yanked around by some over-zealous handler, bounding along next to the dog, jerking on the leash. The dog and handler run together, as one. I'm sure that lots of time is spent schooling the handlers AND the dogs on how to run. (Hhhmmmm.... kind of like technique work and form work while running...)
But the end result is spectacular, even if the handlers appear to be flat footed. They match their dogs stride-for-stride, trotting from one end of the carpet to the other (and back). One thing's for sure: they look as though they could balance a full tray of chrystal on their heads.
And the dogs look pretty spiffy too.
The announcers for the show - which is aired live from Madison Square Garden on CNBC - include Lester Holt and some other guy whose voice I don't quite recognize. I wonder if they ever imagined that they would broadcast Live! from a show featuring our four legged friends...
But that's one of the neatest things in life. The adventure, the suspense, the different roads we venture down. We don't always know the end, don't always know where our choices will take us - but we continue on. We venture foward, set out on our journey.
Just like these puppies (okay - they're not all puppies. But doggies. But they're puppies to me!) - are doing their dog-show thing. We're all doing this life-thing.
And before you know it, you might just end up, exhausted on the futon, husband asleep in the bed, and a little grey kitty (er, Fat Grey Cat as Lelia would sing), snoring soundly away.
Last year at this time, I could have never imagined myself at this point: training for my first Ironman. I am so excited, can hardly contain my enthusiasm. Yes I'm tired, and yes I can feel the effects - but it's worth it. I'm working towards my goals, reaching towards my dreams, so here I am. Last year, I could have never comprehended this... never even imagined that I would be training my heart out for my race 2008 season. Yet here I am.
Where will you be next year?
Where do you want to be?
I don't have the answers. It's up to you. However, as the Westminster Dog Show is an annual event, it'll probably be on for next year around this time... What will you be doing?

Well ALOHA fur ball! I am still cracking up because Mel has "naughty" thoughts on my mind from her Wee bread joke and when I read that you are watching some "doggie style show" I had to laugh... you said you like watching "doggie shows"! Darn that Crazy Mel! Okay, back to a clean conscience...You sure have come a long way just in the time I have known you and I betcha by the time Coach Jen is through with you this year she will have you at some amazing level you never dreamed you would be at... beyond where you are... beyond where you think you are going! Glad to be your buddy and watch this progression. Enjoy your child-less nights and dog shows!
PS: I do see a small resemblance to Tabby...
Let's see, next year. . . . . .
I would like to still be breathing!
I will be in Jacksonville NC, living on a Marine base.
And well, It doesn't really matter to me where I am as long as I am still breathing.
It appears that breathing is a high priority to me right now, doesn't it?
I always laugh at those dog shows because that is so not my dog. Oh dogs are better than cats by the way, don'cha know.
My dog is a public crapper. There I said it. She will hold it for an hour as long as we are alone, but as soon as there is someone around, WHAMO!
I used to take her to Petsmart all the time and let her pick out her own treats, but no more. Every time I take her there, she waits until I am in the check out paying . . . . . . .
"Oh daddy looks, SHE'S POOPING ON THE FLOOR!"
"CLEAN UP AT REGISTER 14"
i was thinking about your post as my teammates were asking me if i'd ever do an ironman and as i was replying "i don't think so but you never know"
and i LOVE THE DOG SHOW!!!!!
I have to admit that I love watching dog shows. Sometimes it's the only darn good thing on!
I love reading about all your Ironman training and your excitement because before too long it will be time for me to put in the extra long training hours and gut wrenching workouts. You are going to do awesome and it's all going to be worth it!
I swear... the dog show is ADDICTING! It's like once the t.v. lands there, you just can't depart!
Very cool post. You know... I have some idea of what I'll be doing this time next year as far as kids, wife, dogs, house stuff is concerned, but I have NO IDEA where I'll be in the training department, and that is kind of cool and kind of scary isn't it?!
Thanks for making me think! And just you think, in just 3 short months give or take a week... you'll be thinking back about your Ironman race, and won't be able to imagine life without it!
don't know if you've already seen it, but "Best in Show" is one of my favorite movies - a must-watch!
I agree that dog owners tend to resemble their dogs. If i were to get a dog, it would probably kinda resemble me. I'm thinking a big dog who is also a good runner and/or great athlete would be what I would look for. So like a greyhound would be cool, maybe a german shepherd. I don't like small dogs at all, for some reason, even though I love cats of all sizes. The thought of you turning into the House Monster cracks me up, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon if you keep putting in 110 mile bike rides!

GEEZE a tickling match with furry legs and dog shows....you guys have some excitment in the house!!!! GOOD COMBO :) Glad to hear you are getting some relaxing time after that big training day!!!!
Hi everyone - thanks for your comments! BreeWee - get your mind out of the gutter!!! I swear - you and Mel are a bad incluence on each other. Ha! And just so you know... I am silky smooth right now. After my swim on Monday, I couldn't take it anymore. It had only been 1 week, but still... so there you have it. I will be FAST in the water this morning. (Well, at least that's my intention).
Ryan - Nate would agree that dogs are better than cats. BUT, he's married to a cat person, who happens to take care of EVERYTHING when he deploys. So a cat it is... (until we decided to "start a family" - where we'll probably get a dog as well.) Ah - but that'll be 10 or 15 years from now.
So it would seem that I'm not the only one out there watching the Dog Shows... huh. You learn seomething new every day.
Courtenay - hope that your camp is going really well! Hurrah for teammies!!!
Everyone else - thanks for your comments - they're all really great!
And no - I have no plans of turning into The House Monster. She had to go on a modified "diet" for a day - meaning soft food because we ran out of the hard stuff. She refused to eat it. Picky kitty! Then again, at 18.2 pounds, she can afford to be picky. And now, she's got her "regular" food back. Nice.
